Tarakohe Quarry
QUARRY / ROCK EXPORT
Currently there is an operational limestone quarry within the property boundaries.
The quarry is uniquely placed, as its rock resource is within 500m of the Port’s loading facilities, thereby providing the obvious benefits of sea transportation.
There is in excess of 50 million plus tons of high quality rock available.
The quarry has been continually operating for over 100 years and has high quality Calcium Carbonate (CaCo3) rock for immediate extraction and use.
It is considered a valuable asset for eastern Golden Bay and provides rock for roading (AP20 – AP100), approved foundations, face run for hard fill, large rock for protection work.
Tarakohe rock is used for repairs and maintenance, harbour reclamation and new harbour works, development of the port precinct, building platforms and coastal protection.
The 30 hectares of working quarry is screened from view by rock walls, has existing sediment ponds and traps – no discharges. There is currently 50 hectares of green buffer (rural zoning) around the quarry.
Golden Bay Cement Company Limited operated a cement works on the site between 1910 and 1986. During this time they extracted high quality limestone rock from the quarry for the production of cement.
PTSL rock basecourse materials comply with NZTA M/4 specifications and Tasman District Council Engineering Standards and Policies 2008 and is approved for oil platform base foundations and underwater pipeline bedding and protection.
The quarry is currently operated by Sollys Ltd.
